Best five minutes of my week so far....

I take an after school club, 'Draw me a story' on a Thursday,
and I just wanted to show some of yesterday's work.

We talked about illustrating things that you can't see, and we illustrated sounds, starting with a bit of fun and illustrating body sounds, tummy rumbles, burps, trumpington Stanley's etc... and then illustrating and mark making to music.

We watched Eric Carles 'I see a song' and then listened and drew to Brassed Off's version of 'Concierto d'Aranjuez' or ( or Concierto Orange juice )

I love that some kids saw shapes and colours which then led onto a narrative of how the music looked in their minds eye.

I also loved how they all went quiet when we dimmed the lights to listen to the gorgeous brass band version of Concierto d'Aranjuez, and they all drew away in the dimmed light listening intently.

Best five minutes of my week by far.

And if you're wondering what a burp or a fart looks like,
it's bit like this......

Love the shape of hiccups and the colours of a tummy rumble.

Happy weekend!

A HUGE MASSIVE THANK YOU to everyone who has donated and sponsored our fundraising efforts this year for the YCC, it really does make a difference.
Last time we fundraised some of the money went towards a miniature radiotherapy machine for kids to role play with their teddies and dolls, making their own experience of cancer treatment a lot less scary for them and mum and dad, how fantastic is that!!
It's these little things that really do make a difference and the work that YCC do is truly fantastic, supporting research that benefits the whole country, so thank you, I think your fab xxx

I've been training and trekking the hills around my home,
and hope gorgeous Yorkshire has prepared me for what's to come in Nepal!

I truly hope Blackpool bridge in Holme has prepared me for some of the suspension bridges of the Annapurna circuit!

Only 3 weeks to go now!

* gulp *

Injections done, visa next and a ridiculous amount of Trek bars bought from Sainsbury's stuffed into my kit bag! I'm really excited to be helping out at the hospice project in Katmandu but nervous for the trek, the reality of what I've actually signed up for is hitting me now!....

but knowing the reasons for me doing it makes me shout
"bring it on!"

Fridays printing heaven...

I love this room.

It's like a therapy room of creative calm,
time doesn't exist and I get lost in my own little world of experimenting, playing, making mistakes and learning and I love every minute of it.

Each print is unique and the plates are positioned by eye giving a very handmade primitive and natural impression.

The images are not predetermined and organically created in the the print rooms,
transferring a spontaneous and fresh feel to each print.

I love that I just don't know how each print will turn out, and the "Ta daaa" when I peel the the paper back to see what impressions have been made,

which figure is talking to who, who is having a family hug and who is midnight garden singing!

I love the creative journeys we go on!
happy Friday.

Remember these? .... well only if you were a child in the 70's,

There's real nostalgia for me when I see these,
little me, spending time fixing coloured flower discs together and seeing the new colours and shapes made when the light catches the over laps.

My Monoprint 'Connect 1' is inspired by the 1970's Octons building discs of my childhood,
their bright colours all connecting together, different but the same, and the gorgeous rich colours they create when they work together.

If only all people were like Octons * sigh *

I'm listing more of my Monoprints  on 'Lil Sonny Sky' my Etsy shop over the coming weeks.

I'm going to use my Octons as inspiration for some new screen printing soon too, and maybe ....

people ghosting amongst others...

'People ghosting'

'lost keys'

'people 2'

These monoprints are one off impressions of stencils I've created on an inked acetate plate. I build each image in layers of colour which are then put through an etching press.

I just love the process, creating unique prints, positioning the plates by eye giving a very handmade primitive and natural impression.

The images are not predetermined and organically created in the the print rooms, transferring a spontaneous and fresh feel to each print. I love the big reveal and the unpredictability!
The lack of control pushes me out of my comfort zone which I think is the only way I creatively learn and grow, so all good!

I've created a Face Book page here because so many people have asked me if I have one for my creative practice. I haven't done one before now because I thought it would take hours of me trying to work out how to do it, but it didn't at all!
